Protein Powders, which ones are actually clean?
There are many options when choosing a protein powder, but how does one choose in such a greenwashed market? The sad truth, most options aren't as healthy as they claim. With protein powder, similar to supplements, you want to make sure what you're taking is truly clean.
The big problem is most brands skip thorough testing and have undetected heavy metal presence. The Clean Label Project tested 134 protein powder brands and 75% of protein powders tested positive for heavy metals. You want to choose brands committed to transparency, rigorous testing, and clean sourcing to ensure supplement safety. I reached out to a bunch and did the work for you - I list the top powders below.
Common Culprits in Protein Powders:
- Heavy Metals: Protein powders, especially plant-based ones, can have heavy metals. Lead, cadmium, and arsenic, although not listed on the label, may be present in concerning amounts. Plant-based protein powders are typically twice as bad as whey.
- BPA: Found in certain packaging, Bisphenol A (BPA) is a concerning chemical that may leach into the product. The Clean Label Project also tested here and found 55% of protein powders tested positive.
- Fillers & Additives: These can include various substances that serve no nutritional purpose and may even be harmful.
- Thickeners/Gums: Often used to enhance texture, these additives can be unnecessary and potentially problematic for some individuals.
- Added Sugar: Some protein powders sneakily contain added sugars.
- Artificial Flavors & Natural Flavors: These synthetic additives contribute to taste but may come at the cost of your health. Despite the innocent-sounding name, 'natural flavors' can be a disguise for a range of undisclosed additives.
Choosing a Clean Organic Protein Powder:
-
Opt for certified organic
-
Third Party Testing for Heavy Metals
-
Short ingredient list with no additives
-
20+ grams of protein
-
For animal based, 100% grass fed and finished
The source of the protein in each powder may be different. There is protein from Plants like Peas, Brown Rice, Hemp, Soybeans), Eggs, or Milk (Casein, Collagen, or Whey).
The Consensus:
It’s not just about protein quantity but the quality and integrity of the ingredients. From all the brands I reached out to, here is the best list. I was a bit shocked how many brands would not share their test results, even the ones that “fake” having them on their websites…
An example from a very “clean” brand from the looks of their website and marketing:
“Thank you for reaching out to us. We understand your request for a third-party report regarding our testing. While we strive to be transparent about our products, unfortunately, we are unable to provide a third-party report at this time. However, we can assure you that our products undergo rigorous testing, and we're committed to maintaining the highest quality standards.”
All the brands below shared their third party heavy metal testing/COA, are all approved, and should be celebrated for making clean protein and investing in testing / high quality products!
